Our caterpillars are here! For the last few weeks of school we will be learning about life cycles by studying butterflies and other insects. We started an art project today based on Eric Carle’s illustrations in “The Hungry Caterpillar”.

Math

We are learning about measurement in math. The students chose their own nonstandard measuring tool, measured my height, and recorded their findings. We concluded the study of length and we will learn about mass this week. The goal for students is be able to take two or more objects and determine attributes can be measured. They should also be able to compare the objects and rank them in order.

Literacy

We are learning about visualization with our reading and writing. The students are working on writing descriptions of apples that create mental images in readers’ minds.

Upcoming events:

Tuesday May 29 – workshop day

On the morning of Friday, May 11, our class got together with their Big Buddies to build kites. Later that day, when the wind picked up, all the students took their kites outside and set them off.

Hello Families,

Sports Day is on Thursday. You will find a note in the planner today with more information and your child’s team colour. If possible, have your child wear his/her team colour on Thursday (red or blue).

We talked about texture again in our art class today. The students glued crumpled up tissue paper squares to butterfly templates. We discussed the difference between smooth and bumpy and soft and rough textures.

We are going to learn about Mozart and his piece, “Tristsch Tratsch Polka” in our music class tomorrow.

Hello Families,

Thank you so much to everyone for coming out to the Celebration of Learning last Thursday. The kids did an excellent job and I am so proud of them!

While there will be no school Monday (April 23 Pro-D day), the rest of the week has a number of exciting events:

On Tuesday, we will have a special visit from BC Lions players -they will read to the students during the event called BC Lions Read Write and Roar at 1:15 p.m..

Earth Day is on Wednesday. The kids have been working hard on posters for Carney’s Recycleman poster contest and will finish them up Wednesday. The theme is “Operation: Clean Sweep”.

We are heading to Brackendale on Thursday for our field trip, where we will meet and interact with their kindergarten students.

The school-wide Jump Rope for Heart event is on Friday.

Thank you so much for making coin donations towards the Team Lina fundraiser. The coin drive continues next week with quarters collection on Tuesday, followed by loonies on Wednesday and toonies on Thursday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello families,

It’s great to be back and see everyone again!

Two items were sent home today: Read Well homework and hot dog lunch order forms. Please make sure order forms are returned by this Friday.

The students are participating in gymnastics all week. There’s lots of equipment to use and skills to learn. I think it is a lot of fun!

Today we learned the following:

-We learned how relate pictures to subtraction problems
-We learned what families need
-We learned how to use texture in artwork
-we learned to cooperate in a team while playing soccer outside

Tomorrow we will be learning…
-We will be learning how to make a family tree on the computer
-We will be learning how to write subtraction sentences
-We will be learning how to make observations using our five senses

We are talking about the differences between needs and wants. Here is what the class came up with for family needs:

We talked about how different surfaces have different textures. The students used crayons to create rubbings of different surfaces in the classroom. Here is one example:

We then drew pictures of where we live, and colored the pictures using the crayon rubbing technique:

WEDNESDAY:

It is Pink Shirt Day tomorrow (http://www.pinkshirtday.ca/). We are taking part in this anti-bullying initiate at our school by reminding everyone to wear pink. In our classroom, we are learning what bullying is, when to ask an adult for help, how we can get along at school, and what assertive behavior is. I am teaching the students that bullying is “mean behavior that happens again and again.” I am encouraging students to be assertive by saying, “I don’t like that. Stop it,” and to get adult help if it doesn’t stop and/or someone is getting hurt.

We have been learning how to build numbers using base ten blocks. The students can show their learning by using tens blocks and ones blocks to build any number up to 100. For example, 35:

We explored the meaning of texture during our art block this afternoon. The students really enjoyed searching for surfaces with different textures to create crayon rubbings:
